Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) today launched a new five-seat Model Y variant in China, boasting the longest range in the SUV’s lineup, following a similar move for the Model 3 sedan three months ago.
The Model Y variant — the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive Edition — starts at RMB 288,500 ($40,500), boasts an 821-kilometer CLTC range, and has an estimated delivery time of 2-4 weeks.
It costs an additional RMB 25,000, or 9.49 percent, compared to the entry-level model with a CLTC range of 593 kilometers, priced at RMB 263,500.
The five-seat Model Y lineup currently offers three options in China, including another all-wheel-drive variant starting at RMB 313,500 with a CLTC range of 750 km.
The SUV lineup also includes the six-seat Model Y L, priced from RMB 339,000 with a CLTC range of 751 km.
Tesla filed for this new Model Y variant last month. It is a single-motor model with a peak motor power of 225 kW (302 horsepower), matching the longest-range new Model 3 variant launched in China on August 12.
It is equipped with a 78.4-kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, supplied by South Korea’s LG Energy Solution — the same as the longest-range Model 3 variant.
The new Model Y variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 201 km/h.
The 821-km Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm — identical to the current five-seat Model Y on sale.
Like other five-seat Model Y variants, Tesla offers incentives for this new model including 5-year 0 percent financing and an RMB 8,000 paint customization credit. The six-seat Model Y L features a 3-year 0 percent financing incentive.
Tesla’s new 821-km Model Y variant is its latest response to China’s fiercely competitive EV market.
After launching the 830-km Model 3 on August 12, the American EV maker cut its price by 3.71 percent on September 1 — less than a month later — before deliveries began.
The Model Y is Tesla’s most important model in China, but its sales have been sluggish this year.
The SUV recorded 292,843 retail sales, or deliveries, in China from January to September, down 13.27 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The Model 3 retailed 139,861 units in China during the same period, marking a 14.12 percent year-on-year increase.
Tesla China’s October wholesale sales — including vehicles sold domestically and exported overseas — totaled 61,497 units, the lowest since May. Breakdown figures for October are not yet available.
Model Y retail sales in China totaled 51,173 units in September, up 6.16 percent year-on-year, boosted by the launch of the six-seat Model Y L.
