Xpeng aims to have XNGP available on all roads in major Chinese cities by the end of 2024, with NGP functionality also available in Europe by then.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) is making its Tesla FSD-like assisted driving feature, XNGP (Navigation Guided Pilot), available in more cities as competition in the space intensifies in China.

XNGP has become available in an additional 27 cities, expanding coverage to 52 cities, according to a post by Xpeng on Weibo today.

Xpeng will open up the public beta of the Xmart OS 4.5.0 system to eligible G9 and P7i vehicles starting immediately, and they will be able to experience the XNGP feature in the covered cities. G6 vehicles will be able to participate in the beta starting on December 18.

XNGP is a full-scenario ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) that Xpeng aims to make available in all scenarios, including highways, city streets, campus roads, and parking lots.

The feature was initially available only on highways, then known as Highway NGP, and Xpeng has since gradually expanded its coverage to urban areas, known as City NGP, with the first five cities covered being Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Shanghai and Beijing.

The company said at its annual 1024 Tech Day event on October 24 that it planned to roll out the XNGP feature in 20 cities not covered by HD maps by the end of November, with coverage expanding to 50 cities by the end of the year.

By the end of 2024, XNGP would be available on all roads in China’s major cities, and the NGP feature will then be available in Europe, Xpeng said at the time.

On November 28, Xpeng pushed Xmart OS 4.4.0 to eligible vehicles, bringing the XNGP feature to an additional 20 cities that don’t have HD maps.

Xpeng’s local peers Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) and Nio (NYSE: NIO) are also both aggressively pushing the coverage of their respective ADAS systems.

Li Auto will begin pushing an OTA 5.0 update to its L-series models on December 19, which will give the full-scenario smart driving feature coverage on all highways, city ring roads and urban roads in 110 cities in China, the company announced earlier this month.

Nio has opted for a slightly different approach, expanding the coverage of its NOP+ (Navigate on Pilot Plus) feature by mileage rather than city.

Nio is confident that it will complete validation of 250,000 kilometers of NOP+ urban pilot routes across 200 cities by the end of the year, the company’s vice president of smart driving research and development, Ren Shaoqing, announced on December 12.

At the first Nio IN 2023 Innovation Day event on September 21, Ren said Nio was aiming to have 60,000 kilometers of NOP+ urban area pilot-assisted driving coverage in the fourth quarter.

By the second quarter of 2024, Nio will complete 400,000 kilometers of NOP+ urban pilot route validation across more than 230 cities, Ren said earlier in the week.
