The New Honda GT Is a Screen Nightmare

The new Honda GT might have a cool name and an interesting shape, but honestly, we can’t get past the interior. We’ve been told smartphones are distracting, but how is this setup any safer? Sure, the side screens mounted on the door panels connect to the exterior cameras. And yes, the upper instrument cluster is necessary. But what about the rest of the screens?

If there’s a silver lining here, it’s that Honda did include a few buttons between the infotainment system and the vertical screen next to the gear selector. The main display also seems to have some fixed touch keys, but we’re still struggling to find much to like inside. The biggest gripe? That passenger screen. It looks like an early 2010s cheap tablet with massive bezels shoved awkwardly into the dashboard.

So, what exactly is the Honda GT? It’s the second batch of models from the newly created Ye series of EVs for China, following last year’s S7 and P7. With a sleeker, coupe-like roofline, it brings a sportier shape to the lineup. Official images show two versions: the blue one is the Dongfeng Honda GT, and the red one is the GAC Honda GT. These badge-engineered twins will be built by Honda’s joint venture partners in China.

Originally shown as a concept last year, the GT is now ready for production. But before that happens, Honda is previewing it at Auto Shanghai alongside other China-only models. These are billed as flagship vehicles of the Ye lineup, although the company hasn’t shared technical specs just yet.

The earlier P7 and S7 ride on the new Honda e:N Architecture W platform, which supports both rear- and all-wheel drive. Single-motor models produce 268 horsepower, while the dual-motor versions crank out 469 hp. Energy comes from an 89.8-kWh CATL battery, offering up to 404 miles (650 kilometers) of range in RWD form or 385 miles (620 kilometers) with AWD. Mind you, these figures are on the optimistic CLTC cycle.

Both Dongfeng and GAC versions feature two-tone paint and a fresh Honda badge that ditches the usual rectangle. While the body panels are mostly the same, the bumpers, headlights, and taillights differ. As with the S7 and P7, the GT’s design is noticeably different from global Honda models. Dare we say, it actually looks pretty good. If only the interior wasn’t such a screen overload.
