It’s highly ironic — electric vehicles are much safer than gasoline-powered vehicles, yet there’s constant media coverage hyping up the opposite idea (that electric vehicles are not safe). Thus, there’s great public concern over the safety of electric vehicles (EVs), especially their batteries. While there are some issues to be aware of and careful about when it comes to EVs, this core point should be emphasized much more in order to help raise consumer awareness and help consumers make better choices: electric vehicles are much safer than gas-powered vehicles.

That’s a simple message that deserves a lot more use, but for those who need to see the details of the matter and learn the ins and outs of electric vehicle safety, we’ve got a new report just for you! Check out The EV Safety Advantage.

As a teaser, here are just a couple of interesting snippets from the report:

IIHS notes that injury claims related to drivers and passengers in EVs are over 40% lower than what was seen from conventional car occupants from 2011 to 2019.

Several of the IIHS Top Safety Pick awards for 2023 were EVs. The Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y both earned a Top Safety Pick+ award, as did the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Rivian R1T, Subaru Solterra, Volkswagen ID.4, Lexus NX 450h+, and Volvo XC90 Recharge. In September 2023, the IIHS added 3 model year 2023 EVs to its Top Safety Pick+ award list: the Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Lexus RZ 450e.

If you’re considering one of those vehicles, you can be assured they are at the highest safety level!

Test results suggest that, as a class, EVs are more crashworthy than their conventionally powered counterparts. Safety precautions and inspections of the electrical systems have evolved to include post-crash checks for isolation of high voltage from the chassis, leakage of volatile gasses, and physical damage of the systems. In addition, vehicles are quarantined and observed after a test to ensure hidden damage does not result in fire risk developing over a series of years.
