Gotion GmbH, the German subsidiary of Chinese battery maker Gotion High-tech, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Pod Point, a UK electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure provider, according to a press release today.
The partnership will further enhance Gotion’s presence in overseas markets, particularly in the home energy storage market, and create new opportunities for the company to tap into new energy markets in Europe, including the UK, Gotion said.
Founded in 2009, Pod Point is now one of the largest providers of EV charging infrastructure in the UK, having delivered more than 211,000 charging points and installed more than 188,000 home charging piles in the UK.
The two companies will collaborate in technology development and battery manufacturing to develop a competitive home energy storage system solutions for customers, Gotion said.
The solutions will integrate renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics to meet users’ needs including home electricity and vehicle charging, as well as by storing energy during low electricity prices and clean power hours in order to reduce the cost of energy use and reduce carbon emissions.
Gotion will support Pod Point with energy storage systems and cells based on its lithium iron phosphate battery product development, design and manufacturing capabilities.
European battery company InoBat and Brill Power, a provider of intelligent battery management platforms, also participated in the signing of the MOU and will provide technical and business support in the partnership, according to Gotion.
InoBat, a Slovakian battery company, said in September that Gotion had acquired a 25 percent stake in it.
The European market is one of the key markets for Gotion to implement its globalization strategy, and the company is looking forward to developing competitive home battery solutions with Pod Point, said Steven Cai, senior vice president and CTO of Gotion.
Gotion is a battery maker backed by German automotive giant Volkswagen. In December 2021, Volkswagen China increased its stake in Gotion to 26.47 percent, making it the largest shareholder in the Chinese battery maker.
Gotion’s plant in Germany officially went into production on September 16 and saw the first locally produced battery roll off the production line.
The German plant’s total capacity is planned to be 20 GWh, and is expected to be completed in four phases, all of which are expected to realize an annual output of 2 billion euros when fully completed, Cai said previously.
