    China NEV retail up 30% year-on-year to 1.06 million in May, preliminary CPCA data show

    • This marks the first time this year that China’s NEV retail sales have returned to above 1 million units.
    • The penetration rate of NEVs in China’s retail market was 53.5 percent in April and 49.76 percent so far this year.

    China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales saw year-on-year growth last month, returning above the 1 million mark for the first time this year.

    In May, China’s passenger NEV retail sales reached 1.056 million units, up 30 percent year-on-year and 14 percent month-on-month, according to preliminary data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

    Year-to-date, China’s passenger NEV cumulative retail sales reached 4.38 million units, up 34 percent year-on-year, according to the CPCA.

    China’s passenger NEV wholesale sales in May reached 1.24 million units, up 37 percent year-on-year and up 9 percent month-on-month.

    Year-to-date, China’s passenger NEV cumulative wholesale sales reached 5.22 million units, up 41 percent year-on-year.

    In May, total retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China reached 1.93 million units, up 13 percent year-on-year and up 10 percent month-on-month.

    Year-to-date, cumulative retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China have reached 8.8 million units, up 9 percent year-on-year.

    This means that the penetration rate of NEVs in retail sales was 53.5 percent in April and 49.76 percent year-to-date.

    In the first week of May, May 1-5, the average daily retail sales of passenger vehicles in China were 41,659 units, down 11 percent year-on-year but up 19 percent compared to the same period last month.

    In the second week of May, May 6-11, the average daily retail sales of passenger vehicles in China were 60,896 units, up 30 percent year-on-year and up 44 percent compared to the same period last month.

    In the third week of May, May 12-18, China’s daily average retail sales of passenger vehicles were 51,175, up 14 percent year-on-year, and remained largely unchanged from the same period last month.

    In the fourth week of May, May 19–25, China’s daily average retail sales of passenger vehicles were 60,823, up 26 percent year-on-year, but down 8 percent from the same period last month.

    In the fifth week of May, May 26-31, China’s daily average retail sales of passenger vehicles reached 95,364 units, up 6 percent year-on-year but down 7 percent compared to the same period last month.

    From May 1 to 31, China’s total wholesale sales of passenger vehicles reached 2.33 million units, up 14 percent year-on-year and up 6 percent compared to the same period last month.

    From May 1 to 5, the average daily wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China was 34,604 units, up 3 percent year-on-year but down 2 percent from the same period last month.

    From May 6 to 11, the average daily wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China was 48,492 units, up 44 percent year-on-year but down 2 percent from the same period last month.

    From May 12 to 18, the average daily wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China was 56,286 units, up 11 percent year-on-year but down 2 percent compared to the same period last month.

    From May 19 to 25, the average daily wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China was 75,923 units, up 14 percent year-on-year but flat from the same period last month.

    From May 26 to 31, the average daily wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China was 156,618 units, up 10 percent year-on-year, but down 1 percent compared to the same period last month.

    So far this year, the wholesale sales volume of passenger vehicles in China has reached 10.797 million units, up 12 percent compared to the same period last year.


    Tesla China sells 61,662 cars in May, down 15% year-on-year

    This marks the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year decline in Tesla China’s sales.
