The Canadian tar sands, also called oil sands, are a massive site of oil extraction in the province of Alberta. They cover an area larger than England and are one of the biggest industrial projects on the planet. The type of oil in the tar sands is called “bitumen.” which is extremely heavy and difficult to extract. Getting it from deep in underground to the surface can use up massive amounts of water — about what a small city might use on a daily…

Tesla recently released a new update to its Vehicle Safety Report, revealing data for all four quarters of 2023. The voluntarily published quarterly reports include the number of miles driven per accident registered when using Autopilot technology, not using Autopilot technology, and the U.S. average (the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA for calendar year 2022). The data gives us glimpses of how Autopilot improves vehicle safety, but it has some limitations (more on that at the bottom of this post) due to the methodology. For example, Tesla counts all accidents, regardless of the cause, despite the fact…

Which CEO of a global automaker suggested that EVs may never top 30% of the global vehicle market? Which EV from a U.S. automaker became the top-selling vehicle on the planet, electric or not? This is our look back at the Week In Reverse—right here at Green Car Reports—for the week ending January 26, 2024. Volkswagen has confirmed that “most” 2023-2024 ID.4 models qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit, making it the first foreign automaker to get the nod under tightened sourcing rules. Models supplied with batteries from SK On—rather than LG—meet the requirements. It applies to about 80%…

Have you ever been in the mood to drive an electric bus, and then thought to yourself, “the only thing that could make this better is if the bus was shaped like a marsupial”? Yea, me neither. At least not until I stumbled upon this precious specimen of a koala bus. It’s not the first animal-shaped electric bus that has headlined the Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week column. But it just might be the cutest. And to be fair, I did think it was a mouse until our graphics guy corrected me. But that’s kind of the…

That has been dominated by China. The Inflation Reduction Act is changing that. Subsidies for mining EV battery minerals, subsidies for processing those minerals, subsidies for battery cell production, and subsidies for battery pack production are combining to focus a lot of battery production in the United States. However, it’s still a small battery production market at the moment and there are gaps in what is produced.…

Tesla has announced a new $500 million project to build a giant Dojo supercomputer cluster at Gigafactory New York in Bufallo. Dojo is a new supercomputer designed from the ground up by Tesla specifically to train AI with videos. The project suffered significant delays, but it seemed to be getting some momentum last year as the first Dojo cluster came online in the summer. However, we also learned that Tesla let go of some of the program’s top leadership last month. Furthermore, CEO Elon Musk described the project during Tesla’s earnings call this week as a “long shot” with a “not…

Cruise, the self-driving arm of General Motors, revealed that it is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. News of the probe was first reported by TechCrunch and was disclosed by Cruise itself as part of a nearly 200-page report by Quinn Emanuel, a law firm hired by Cruise to assess how the company handled its response to an accident that occurred on October 2nd, 2023 involving a Cruise-branded Chevy Bolt and a jaywalking pedestrian. While Cruise disclosed separate probes from both federal agencies, it does not outline the scope or any further details surrounding them. Get Fully…

New Englanders, rejoice – at last, Vermont’s first Tesla store is being fitted up in South Burlington and will open soon. January 26: The Vermont Tesla store is so not going to open in the latter half of January, as we initially expected. One of our readers (thanks, Doug!) went past the store today and spoke to a supervisor, who said there was still a lot of work to do and that the store wouldn’t open until March 1 at the earliest. He took a photo of the store’s interior and shared it with us: Yeah, that is nowhere near being…

Tesla closed the year 2023 as the world’s largest all-electric car manufacturer, which might not be the case in 2024 due to BYD’s surge. The company’s potential annual manufacturing output is estimated at over 2,350,000 units, according to the Q4 financial report (no change compared to its Q3 report). Get Fully Charged Tesla EV production In 2023, Tesla produced more than 1.84 million all-electric cars (up 35% year-over-year). This year, the volume might exceed 2 million for the very first time. According to Tesla, after the scheduled global factory shutdown in Q3, global production reached a record annualized run rate…

The Tesla Semi has been my favorite Tesla vehicle since it was introduced. Cutting emissions from long-haul semi trucks in a slick new design with super highway Autopilot offers a lot to love. So, it has been quite disappointing to see how slowly Semi production and deliveries have ramped up. Was the electric semi truck just not ready for prime time? I know it’s delivering products for Frito-Lay, but … chips…
