The BMW i5 is the all-electric version of the world-famous 5 Series sedan, and now–for the first time–there’s also a battery-powered version of the 5 Series wagon. Neither the BMW i5 Touring nor the 5 Series Touring plug-in hybrid is coming to the United States, with a previous press release shredding Americans’ dreams of ever getting their hands on the electrified wagons with the following sentence: “The unique combination of…

Performance was never the Porsche Taycan’s problem. It is a Porsche, after all, and that’s kind of what they do there. Instead, the German automaker’s first all-electric effort never blew anyone way with its range. Granted, it was always positioned as a performance car first and foremost, and even something like a 911 Turbo S won’t get amazing fuel economy. But Porsche says many of its more than 150,000 Taycan customers to date wanted to go the distance and spend less time charging, so that’s what engineers wanted to deliver with an extensive 2025 model year update. Meet the 2025…

No EV owner can escape battery degradation. But drivers of battery-powered cars can take steps to reduce the rate at which the high-voltage battery pack loses its energy-storage capacity so that the driving range stays as close as possible to the original figure five or 10 years down the road. The issue of battery degradation is well documented and we have several articles about what owners can do to minimize its effects, but this time we get a very nice rundown of what actually happens inside the battery when it loses capacity from none other than the man behind the…

A small number of 2023-2024 Kia Niro EV and 2023 Kia EV6 electric vehicles are being recalled for an issue that most definitely can’t be remedied with an over-the-air update.  In affected vehicles, Kia explains, one of the driveshafts may have been improperly heat-treated, potentially allowing it to break under load. That would result in the sudden loss of drive power.  Kia has narrowed down the number of potentially affected U.S. vehicles to 1,243, including certain 2023-2024 Kia Niro EV models made from June 27 through July 13, 2023, and 2023 Kia EV6 models made from January 26 through April…

The first new EV charging site in Tennessee funded through the Biden administration’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program bucks the trend of co-locating chargers with gas pumps. Installed by Atlanta-based charging infrastructure firm EnviroSpark, the new chargers are being hosted by a Waffle House restaurant in Lakeland, Tennessee. Of the NEVI-funded sites in the state, this is the only restaurant project and one of only two not located at a gas station or convenience store, according to an EnviroSpark press release. Porsche Taycan charging Tennessee documents show this location as costing $889,144, with $702,423 of it covered by the…
