EVs and plug-in hybrids average more problems than hybrids and gasoline cars, J.D. Power found in its 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study. The study, which is based on owner-reported issues with vehicles within the first three years of ownership, showed an average 256 problems per 100 vehicles for EVs and 216 for plug-in hybrids. That’s higher than the industry average, which increased by four problems per 100 vehicles over 2023, to 190. 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge Hybrids appeared less trouble-prone, with 191 problems per 100 vehicles. That’s just one problem above the industry average, and four above gasoline cars’ average of…

In the context of a recovering overall market (+6% YoY), BEVs surged +57% year over year (YoY) in January, to 7,865 registrations. That means BEVs started the year with 23% market share — their best January ever. Plugin hybrids (PHEVs) were also up by 12%, to 4,320 registrations or 13% market share. January is usually one of the best months for PHEVs, so it is not a worrying sign that plugin hybrid sales represented 35% of all plugin sales. After all, BEVs are consistently…
There’s gonna be a Tesla ad full of lies that will play the Superbowl today, but it isn’t coming from Tesla. After years of resisting, Tesla has started to advertise over the last year. Recently, the automaker has ramped up its advertising effort with more ads on X and even video ads on Youtube. It doesn’t look like Tesla is quite ready to jump into the holy grail of advertising, Super Bowl ads, but it doesn’t mean that it won’t be featured in one. “The Dawn Project” released that it is going to play not one but two ads about…
Yesterday evening, an autonomous Waymo car was set on a fire in San Francisco. The moment was captured and recorded on social media by several bystanders. According to one eyewitness account from Michael Vandi provided to The Autopian, people were setting off fireworks (Lunar New Year was Saturday) on Jackson Street in San Francisco. An electric Jaguar I-Pace operated by Waymo was waiting for that crowd to disperse when somebody “jumped on the hood of the car” and broke the windshield. Others joined in: “People with skateboards breaking the glass, and others graffitiing the car.” The situation then escalated: Then…

Tesla applied a special pricing update to the Model Y in the United States. It appears to be a new approach to price adjustments. Instead of simply changing the price like in the past, the manufacturer announced that the price change would only be temporary. The new Tesla Model Y RWD and Long Range AWD are now $1,000 less expensive, while the Performance version of the car maintained its previous price. However, the change is time-limited and concerns only vehicles that will be delivered by the end of the month (February 29). Get Fully Charged Tesla Model Y is the…
Walmart announced an upcoming expansion and modernization of its facilities in the United States, with sustainability in mind. It means more energy-efficient equipment and lighting, lower-impact refrigerants and EV charging points. During the next 12 months, the company intends to remodel 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico. Separately, over the next five years, Walmart is planning to build or convert more than 150 stores in the U.S. All new and remodeled stores will reflect Walmart’s Store of the Future concept, which includes EV chargers. Get Fully Charged EV chargers coming… everywhere The electric vehicle charging infrastructure is gradually expanding.…
EVs tend to weigh more than comparable internal-combustion models, which may require a rethink of highway guardrail designs, according to a new University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) study. For it, researchers conducted what they claim are the first-ever crash tests specifically looking at EVs and guardrails. The tests showed that guardrails previously tested with internal-combustion cars weighing up to 2,400 pounds and pickup trucks weighing 5,000 pounds might not be adequate for some heavier EVs. 2018 Tesla Model 3 In one test, conducted Oct.12, 2023, a Rivian R1T weighing about 7,000 pounds and moving at 60 mph “tore through the barrier with…

An Argonne team developing materials for solid-state batteries took an unexpected detour to investigate tiny short-circuits known as soft-shorts. Their insights will benefit battery researchers around the world. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have shed important new light on what the early signs of battery failure look like. Their study — which relates to a condition called soft-shorts — provides the research community with valuable knowledge and methods to design better electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The Argonne team’s research focused…
After a report 5,000 hours of development time, custom tuning house Lunaz has breathed new life into this classic Range Rover Safari cabriolet by ditching the old 3.9L V8 and replacing it with dual electric motors — but there’s a lot more to this build than an engine swap! Lunaz says the project was originally inspired by the Range Rover convertible featured in the 1983 James Bond film “Octopussy” and driven by Roger Moore. Starting with a 1983 two-door wagon model, the Lunaz crew did more than just chop the Ranger’s top. Indeed, it seems like they really took Q’s…
