I think every electric vehicle owner has had that “a-ha” moment; that instance when you just sort of get how everything works, when fear gives way to excitement about the advantages of moving on from gasoline, when everything clicks. Sometimes that happens behind the wheel. Other times, it happens when someone you know and trust can show you the way.  Regardless of how it happens, that lack of firsthand and secondhand experience may be a big factor in holding back wider EV adoption. That leads off this midweek edition of our Critical Materials morning news roundup. Also on today’s reading list:…

When it comes to charging stations, EV drivers want the same amenities drivers currently get at gas station, a new AutoPacific study found. The AutoPacific EV Consumer Insights Study asked over 7,200 “future EV acceptors,” defined by the consulting and market-research firm as “those who either intend to purchase or will consider purchasing an EV in the near future,” about their ideal charging experience. Respondents pointed to gas-station features like windshield cleaner, air pumps for inflating tires, and vacuums as most-wanted features for charging stations, along with more charging-specific elements like clear signage for pricing and charging speed. Mercedes-Benz AMG…

Just like the original Who Killed The Electric Car? moment, we’re seeing attempts to derail and gut EVs so that entrenched interests can keep making money. While some of the writing about the problem is sensational (blaming Mr. Bean for everything), there is still a lot of bad information circulating about EVs. Not only have we seen problems with outright misinformation and disinformation, we’re also seeing governments…

The JackRabbit electric micro bike is as divisive as it is diminutive, which is to say, “very.” But one thing just got a lot less micro on this pint-sized commuter. The company has just unveiled its RangeBuster battery, which has nearly 250% of the capacity of an original JackRabbit battery. The JackRabbit tends to conjure up strong emotions in those who see it. There’s always one camp who shakes their heads and asks, “Why?” Then there’s the other camp who gleefully hops aboard the funny little electric two-wheeler, tossing a “Why not?!” over their shoulder as they ride off grinning…

The 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell will include a plug-in power-sharing feature, the automaker revealed with a short video that also offers the best look yet at the crossover’s design. The video shows a camouflaged CR-V Fuel Cell being used to power a coffee maker at a roadside stop. In what some automakers term vehicle-to-load, or V2L, it’s plugged into a charge port in the front fender. 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell A closer look, as well as an accompanying press release on Honda’s Japanese-language website, also hints that the hydrogen fuel-cell version of the CR-V might have slightly different…

I was going to try to narrow this weekly report down to just a few, but it was impossible again, and I ended with a bit more than 10. José Pontes does such a good job with these, and…

A new chart on US EV sales has me revisiting a topic Steve Hanley and I have both covered recently, but it’s warranted, because there are a lot of headlines and there’s a lot of hype falsely declaring that the EV market is struggling. Sometimes such stories are focused on the US market and sometimes they are focused more broadly, but no matter what their focus, they are wrong. In this story, the focus is US EV sales, but also note that global BEV…

It’s the worst-kept secret in the automotive world, if you can even call it a secret anymore: leading Chinese plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD wants to build a factory in Mexico that would give it a theoretical base of entry into the United States market. BYD is already selling cars in Mexico; why not make them there too, right? And today, a top BYD executive revealed a few more details about this potential expansion plan.  Zhou Zou, the country manager of BYD Mexico, told Nikkei Asia in Mexico City that BYD “is considering” setting up a plant in Mexico,…
