In December, global registrations of plug-in electric cars reached another all-time record, although the growth rate barely outpaced the overall car market. According to EV-Volumes data, shared by researcher Jose Pontes, 1,556,728 new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered globally in December (about 23% more than a year ago). The previous record of 1,385,104 was set in November. The market share amounted to roughly 22% (compared to 21% a year ago). Electrify America on Wednesday unveiled its first indoor charging station, which the charging network says will serve as a template for future sites in urban areas. Located in San Francisco’s South Market neighborhood, two blocks from the Bay Bridge, the new “flagship” site has 20 chargers providing up to 350 kw of power, according to an Electrify America press release. California-based electric vehicle start-up Rivian has introduced two new entry-level battery and range options for its R1T truck and the R1S SUV. The new options are called Standard and Standard+. The new Standard range option, available only with the dual-motor variants, will deliver a Rivian-estimated 270-mile range from a 106-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The Standard+ pack will deliver an estimated 315 miles of range from a 121 kWh battery pack. The latter can be had with both the dual-motor and performance variants. General Motors has hired former Tesla battery-development boss Kurt Kelty as its new vice president of batteries. In this newly-created position, Kelty will be tasked with bringing together GM’s development resources “to more quickly deliver profitable, lower-cost, higher performing electric vehicles to customers at scale,” and will report directly to GM president Mark Reuss, the automaker said in a press release.
