Earlier today a report claimed that Xiaomi may offer 2,000-3,000 free Beijing license plates as a promotional effort. (Image credit: Xiaomi EV) A report today claiming that customers who buy the Xiaomi EV could get a free Beijing license plate has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Now Xiaomi (HKG: 1810) is denying it. “(The report) is completely untrue, and the pricing, delivery and sales policy of the Xiaomi EV will be subject to the official release,” a Xiaomi Weibo account wrote. For customers who don’t have a Beijing license plate, they can consider buying one of the first Xiaomi…
Humanoid robot maker UBTech showed its Walker S robot working on an assembly line at a Nio factory in a video. (A video screenshot shows a UBTech humanoid robot putting a logo on a Nio vehicle.) Nio (NYSE: NIO) is testing humanoid robots on its assembly line at one of its factories, a move that is expected to boost already high levels of automation. Hong Kong-listed humanoid robot maker UBTech Robotics (HKG: 9880) yesterday shared a video on Weibo showing its Walker S robot working on an assembly line at a Nio factory. This is the first time Walker S…
Just hours after Nikola announced that it had completed the first North American deliveries of its hydrogen fuel cell electric semi trucks, Biagi Bros. Logistics took to social media to post pictures of its new fleet of Nikolas. Plural. While we’ve seen a few stories about Nikola’s HFCEV semi trucks in recent weeks, all those pictures of trucks looked kind of alike. Like, if you were a NKLA skeptic, they looked enough alike that you could squint and convince yourself that they were all pictures of the same truck, maybe. The Biagi Bros. pictures? They’re different. For starters, despite the…
Sign up for daily news updates from CleanTechnica on email. Or follow us on Google News! From EV charging myths to EV battery myths, there are a lot of myths to go around. Electric vehicles are on the precipice of becoming mainstream, but they aren’t mainstream yet. If you remember the famous tech adoption lifecycle chart, you’re not reaching the “early majority” until above 15% market share (the US is at 7.5% BEV market share, but that in itself is deceiving, as California is at 21.4% BEV adoption and accounts for 33.8% of US BEV registrations — meaning BEV adoption…
There’s no longer an expiry date on Mercedes-Benz combustion engines. Due to the recent trends of slower-than-expected demand for EVs, the German automaker is recalibrating its EV transition pace, cutting down the number of electric models it expects to sell by 2030 in half, the brand announced today in an investor statement. Earlier, Mercedes-Benz had pledged to go fully electric by 2030, and permanently consign its combustion engines to the history books by then. But it now plans to continue selling ICE cars well into the next decade. It has halved its EV goals, and pure electric models and hybrids…
2024 is shaping up to be a make-it-or-break-it year for any automaker in the EV game. GM is no exception. Its Ultium platform rollout still isn’t going all that well. As a result, it’s pivoting to a more diverse portfolio that includes hybrids. The Goliath is shifting some of its EV plans and supposedly canceling some of its more interesting products in the pipeline, too, according to a new report from Autoweek. Autoweek reports that GM is low-key in crisis mode, rejiggering its full-size truck program to accommodate a PHEV model. It’s not clear what kind of PHEV this will be. It could…
At the media launch of the all-new 2024 Honda Prologue, I knew drive time would be fairly limited. Honda folks had us scheduled to scoot around on their suitcase-sized e-scooter for roughly as long as we had with the actual vehicle we all came to drive. But towards the end of our couple hours with the vehicle, we decided to make a beeline to the local Electrify America quick charger. Not realizing until later that other groups of drivers had been asked not to DC quick charge these Prologues. Whoops. Get Fully Charged Fast charging has been a challenge for…
In countries where electric cars have been successfully democratized, like China, for example, affordability is inextricably linked to low raw material prices. In the U.S., where the road to electrification is far more complex, the impact of increasingly lower raw material prices is expected to truly materialize by the end of the decade, new research by the International Council On Clean Transportation has revealed. EV batteries are expensive. They require critical minerals like lithium, nickel, manganese, and graphite among others to function. Lithium’s demand has skyrocketed in the past few years. So much that it’s often termed “white gold.” Growing environmental…

I once thought that Honda’s EV platform tie-up with General Motors would result in more bespoke products—vehicles that may have shared some things under the skin, but otherwise felt like wholly original products. The Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue looked so much different from what we’ve seen on the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, or China’s Buick Electra E5. And yet, when the car was revealed past its exterior photos, it became exceedingly clear that Honda and Acura’s EV GM-based EV efforts are way more similar under the skin than meets the eye; a fact validated when we finally got behind…
