The Yangjian chip will allow Nio to save about $100 per vehicle and recover its development costs in about a year, William Li said. (Image credit: Nio) The first chip developed in-house by Nio (NYSE: NIO) will officially begin mass production next month to reduce the cost of a core component. Nio’s first chip, a LiDAR main control chip, will go into mass production in October, William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of the electric vehicle company, said at the Nio IN 2023 innovation day event in Shanghai today. The chip is named Yangjian, after Yang Jian, a character in…
The U.K. government on Wednesday said it would seek to delay a ban on the sale of gasoline and diesel cars that lack a charge port by five years—irritating both automakers and environmental groups. In 2018, the U.K. introduced a Road to Zero program that would require 50% plug-in vehicles by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Then in 2019 it moved to tighten that rule, instead targeting 2035. And just a year later in 2020, it pushed the commitment up yet again such that sales of most new gas and diesel models would end in 2030, with plug-in hybrids allowed…

Shirley and Bruce bought their dual/twin-motor Volvo XC40 Recharge, with 4 wheel drive, because they wanted to go green without screaming virtue signaling and ostentatious wealth. “We decided not to buy an electric Mercedes,” they told me. The message given by the Volvo is that they are environmentally conscious, in a subtle way. They didn’t get much money for trading in their 18-year-old Mazda6 Sport. “After all, it had done 250,000 km.” Why an SUV? Like all of us, Shirley is finding it harder…

Hyundai is rushing plans to get its Georgia EV “Metaplant” up and running. Maserati is charging up dealerships for pending EV arrivals. And the Tesla Model 3 is the most-leased EV. This and more, here at Green Car Reports. The Inflation Reduction Act and Biden EV policy—and especially the disadvantage they place on companies seeking to import EVs—has spurred Hyundai to rush plans to get it Georgia EV “Metaplant” humming earlier. Based on comments made by Hyundai’s top U.S. executive, it’s now aiming for Georgia-made Hyundai EVs in fall 2024. Leasing the Tesla Model 3 is a popular option—so popular…
Hyundai’s top U.S. executive on Tuesday suggested that the company is hoping to speed up construction at its $7.6 billion manufacturing complex near Savannah, Georgia, dubbed the “Metaplant.” The move is prompted by what the Hyundai Motor Group has called the inherent unfairness of the Inflation Recovery Act to companies relying on importing EVs and batteries. That means EVs from the mass-production facility might start rolling out in fall 2024. The Associated Press (via WABE) reported that news of the stepped-up timeline came in comments made by José Muñoz, Hyundai President and COO and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North…

In the heart of Jutland, Denmark, two guys meet up to talk about the birth of Tesla, or rather, to feel the birth of Tesla. The only way to really understand what Tesla the company is all about is to experience the original Tesla Roadster. The owner of one of these rare vehicles, Jens Boll, invited me to get up close to his 2010 Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport in its stunning very orange color. (Yes, this is in fact the official Tesla color name!)…

Over the past three summers, our family of four has driven around 12,000 miles, across 20+ states, on our now annual electric vehicle road trip. After many days on the road, we can confidently say that one of the most important strategies (if not the most) for a successful multi-day, multi-state EV adventure is to charge your vehicle overnight wherever you’re staying. This might seem obvious, but it’s enough of a change in travel planning compared to gas-fueled road trips of the past, that…

Last year, car prices were insane. My local dealer had a few Bolts on the lot, but consistently wanted $5,000 or more over MSRP. So, I had to drive into El Paso looking for deals. It turns out there was one sitting on the lot waiting for a new recall battery, and someone else had a deposit on it. A day before the battery came in, the other buyer backed…
Tesla’s Full Self Driving Beta V11.4.4: When It’s Good, It’s Very, Very, Good; When It’s Bad, It’s Horrid
Sign up for daily news updates from CleanTechnica on email. Or follow us on Google News! Below, I will look at what Tesla Full Self Driving (FSD) is currently very good at, what it’s bad at, what it’s very bad at, where I have to intervene even though I don’t have to, and the future of FSD. I have several updates throughout the piece, but let’s start with a few “news” items. News Flashes: Tesla just reduced the price of FSD from $15,000 to $12,000 — or you can rent it for $199/month. Is it worth it? At $199, you…
