Now in its 21st day, the United Auto Workers’ strike on General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis has proven to be a bitter, protracted affair. But electric vehicles have been looming large over all of it — namely, the fact that most EV battery plants in the US are not unionized, and future EVs may require far less in the way of parts, labor and jobs than conventional cars currently do. But on Friday afternoon, UAW President Shawn Fain announced what he called a “major breakthrough” with GM specifically: its battery manufacturing will be placed under the UAW’s Master Agreement, meaning…

Based on the results of its unaudited financial report for the 3rd quarter of 2023, Vietnamese car maker VinFast’s revenue is up 159% to $343 million year-over-year. The increase in revenue was driven by strong sales of the company’s electric vehicles (EVs) in Vietnam. Its performance gives it the confidence to expect to receive up to VND29,000 billion (US$1.2 billion) more in grants from parent company Vingroup. It may also get capital infusions from VinFast Chairman Phạm Nhật Vượng and two key shareholders in…

Tesla late Thursday introduced yet another price cut for its Model 3 and Model Y, as represented on its consumer website, bringing the price of these new EVs down to their lowest ever.  The move, cutting up to $2,250 off these models, depending on the version, directly follows news earlier this week that, globally, third-quarter Tesla deliveries came up short of what had been expected. Viewed as a single quarter, they might not be on track for the company’s 1.8-million-vehicle guidance for 2023. Tesla also recently introduced a base rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y—so altogether, the entry cost of…

Toyota has big plans for its future electric vehicle lineup, and has made sure the world is aware of that by making multiple announcements in recent months. The Japanese automaker said earlier this year that it aimed to launch 10 new battery-electric vehicles by 2026, when its annual production of BEVs should hit 1.5 million. The company previewed more than a dozen Toyota and Lexus EVs in December 2021, but it remains to be seen how many of those concepts will reach production. According to Japan’s Best Car and a recent filing with the USPTO, Toyota may be working on…

Wind and solar are marvelous technologies, but their output tends to vary depending on wind speeds, cloud cover, and other factors. Until recently, grid-scale storage batteries have relied on lithium-ion batteries — NMC to begin with, but LFP more recently. Peak Energy believes it has the ability to manufacture sodium-ion batteries that outperform both at half the cost. On its website, Peak Energy says it is “the first American venture…
