Great Wall-backed Svolt Energy gets order to supply batteries worth over $10 billion to BMW, report says
BMW will leave the remaining order of about 70 GWh of its 160 GWh battery needs to be shared between CATL and Eve Energy, according to local media. https://img.cnevpost.com/2023/10/12165347/2023101208534791.mp3 Svolt Energy, a battery maker spun off from Great Wall Motor, will be BMW’s battery supplier in addition to CATL and Eve Energy, a new report said. Toyota, the maker of the bZ4X electric crossover, has partnered with Japanese petroleum company Idemitsu to make a mass-market solid-state battery that will be used in upcoming electric vehicles starting in 2027 or 2028, the two entities announced today. Leaving the obvious irony of a petroleum company that operates oil platforms making EV batteries aside, it’s worth noting that Idemitsu has been working on sulfide solid electrolytes since 2001 and already has a small pilot facility that has been steadily increasing its output since its announcement in June. Toyota’s recently announced battery technology roadmap showed that the first generation of…
The Model 3 contributed 4.78 percent to Tesla’s sales in China in September, a new low since October 2021, likely because Chinese customers are waiting for the new Model 3. https://img.cnevpost.com/2023/10/12154641/2023101207464152.mp3 The Model Y continued to contribute the lion’s share of Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) sales in China last month, while the Model 3 saw a big drop in volume as deliveries of its new version have yet to begin. Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan as well as the Model Y SUV. Deliveries of the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y in China…
Kia on Thursday hosted its first Kia EV Day outside of Seoul, where the South Korean company shared specifications on its EV5 electric compact crossover, which was revealed in August, and unveiled two electric concept vehicles. All three vehicles will make it to production, and they are intended to make Kia electric vehicles accessible to more people. Kia said they’ll be priced at $35,000-$50,000. American sales are less certain, though. In a statement, the company said, “Kia is considering to export the EV5 to North America starting from 2025. There is no plan to produce the EV5 in North America.” U.S. public relations representatives intimated that the EV5 will come to Canada and not the U.S. as the company…
Sign up for daily news updates from CleanTechnica on email. Or follow us on Google News! There are approximately 1 million ebike companies out there now — or, at least, that’s how it feels. Whatever the number is, it can be hard to know how to choose quality ebikes at a good price and not end up buying a bike with inadequate quality or too high of a price. Well, as safety — and particularly the safety of batteries — has become a broader concern, one benefit of often-unfounded fears of battery fires has arisen: more and more ebikes are…

A Tesla Cybertruck stainless steel supplier has been revealed: Outokumpu is going to provide steel for the novel electric pickup truck. One of the Cybertruck’s biggest differentiating features is the fact that Tesla plans to build it with a body and “exoskeleton” made of “ultra-hard” stainless steel: Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass. The automaker said that it planned to develop its own alloy for it.…
Tesla announced today that the Giga Texas plant has just built its 20 millionth 4680-type cylindrical battery cell: “Just built our 20 millionth 4680 cell at Giga Texas!” It’s a very significant milestone, which also reveals the average production rate over the past four months, because on June 16, the company celebrated 10 million cells produced at the site. It means that 10 million additional cells were produced in slightly less than four months. That’s almost 17 weeks and an average rate of 2.5+ million cells per month (roughly 600,000 cells per week). Tesla analyst Troy Teslike estimates that the…
