The UK has a long tradition of small cars, exemplified by the original Mini but including a gaggle of MGs, Triumphs, Humbers, Hillmans, Cortinas, Austins, and the like. Mostly they were small because raw materials were scarce after World War II, but also because Britain taxed cars based on horsepower. Smaller cars were lighter, which means they could make do with less powerful engines. While all of that is true historically, it does not explain why most electric cars sold in the UK today…
Anders Bell is now the head of research and development at Volvo Cars, but recently he served a rather lengthy stint at Tesla Motors as senior director of engineering. He started at Tesla in 2016 and spent 6 years there before ending his stint with Tesla in November of last year. Prior to that, he worked with Volvo, so he’s returning to the Swedish brand. He brings some 25 years of engineering experience in the automotive field. The news here is not that Anders Bell is back at Volvo but rather what Bell brings to Volvo and what he has…
BYD is expected to soon announce a decision about the location of its first European electric car factory. According to German newspaper The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS), via Reuters), the European plant will be built in Hungary. The information is unofficial, based on “unnamed sources close to BYD” who indicate that “the decision had already been made internally.” The article also points out that last month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu. Well, there are no official comments yet, but the selection of Hungary would not be surprising, as BYD already has an electric…
Here at Electrek we have spent countless hours undertaking detailed hands-on testing of hundreds of electric bikes. Since the introduction of its e-Power series-hybrid system seven years ago, Nissan has refined the tech and leaned on it as the path toward a fully electric future for the brand. But there isn’t a single U.S.-market model yet with this tech. What’s the holdup? Partly, it’s that Nissan has focused its hybrids toward other markets. In Europe, where Nissan plans to go all-EV starting in 2030, it’s pushing ahead rapidly with the tech and seeing very strong demand for e-Power models there. Earlier this year Nissan expected electrified models to make up 55% of the global mix by 2030;…
Sign up for daily news updates from CleanTechnica on email. Or follow us on Google News! Tesla vehicles keep getting smarter over time with the help of free over-the-air (OTA) software updates. A new and interesting feature has just started rolling out to Tesla cars in Europe that warns drivers if they are inattentive or drowsy. A Tesla vehicle monitors a driver’s eye movement and signals from the steering wheel to calculate the driver’s attentiveness. If the system thinks the driver is not paying attention or is drowsy, it will generate an audio-visual warning to get back driver’s attention to…
Tesla’s Cybertruck is finally hitting the road at the end of this month, but it was spotted today in a special color – matte black, the first time we’ve seen the Cybertruck in anything other than basic unpainted stainless steel. We’ve technically seen the Cybertruck with other wraps, but those were mostly camouflage or jokes to make it look like another truck. The appearance of these wraps fueled speculation that Tesla might offer wraps when the Cybertruck is released, even though none of the ones we’ve seen yet have seemed like they would see public availability. But now we’ve seen…
After months of seeing various Tesla Cybertruck images and videos in the original stainless steel color or wrapped in some fancy camouflage or design theme – even disguised as a Ford F-150 for fun – it’s time for something really interesting. Or at least, timeless and classic, like all-black. Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s Chief Designer, has been spotted driving a black-wrapped Cybertruck in Santa Monica. According to Adam C (aka @AtomAntEater) on X, the vehicle was seen at today’s Santa Monica Teslas & Coffee. Because von Holzhausen was in it, this sighting might not only indicate his preference for the matte…
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently had an opportunity to visit the Tesla Giga Berlin-Brandenburg plant in Grünheide near Berlin, Germany. Besides making some pronouncements about interior decor, Musk reportedly let on that the plant is expected to be engaged in making Tesla’s next-generation, affordable electric car model. According to the Gigafactory Berlin News channel on Twitter/X, which covers plant-related news, Musk announced during his visit that the upcoming €25,000 electric car (known in the U.S. to be a $25,000 electric car) will be produced in Berlin. We tried to find additional confirmation of this report, but apparently, the speech…
Honda is taking a page out of just about every other major automotive manufacturer’s playbook by debuting its first electric bicycle, the Honda e-MTB Concept. The bike was just shown off at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, where it joined several other futuristic and/or brand-widening debuts from other leading Japanese motorcycle companies and automakers. The Honda e-MTB Concept looks more like a downhill electric bike and maintains a fairly realistic design. Unlike some e-bike concepts that are fairly far-fetched, Honda’s actually looks like something that could reach production. It’s a promising trend in e-bike concepts lately, showing that some…
