Most Americans are unlikely to buy an EV as their next car, yet a slim majority of Americans support government incentives for those that do want to go electric, according to a recent Ipsos/Yahoo Finance survey. The survey, based on what Ipsos described as a “nationally representative probability sample of 1,025 general population adults age 18 or older,” found that only 31% of Americans are likely to purchase an EV as their next vehicle. Likelihood of EV interest varied based on a number of factors. For instance, those with college degrees were more likely to consider an EV than those…
In a number of recent articles like this one at Futurism, Elon Musk has been described as broken. Specifically, one author familiar with the Twitter purchase said, “Elon didn’t just break Twitter, Twitter broke Elon Musk.” To justify that statement, the author points to several incidents that Twitter employees told him about. In one case, Elon Musk is said to have retreated into his office at Twitter HQ and locked himself in. For reasons not fully explained, Twitter employees almost called the police because they reportedly had reasons to believe he’d harm himself. The author claims that as public opinion…
Tesla is now selling a 1:18 diecast model of its most popular vehicle on its online shop. The Model Y has become incredibly popular, and is expected to be the world’s best-selling vehicle this year. And now you can get one for the cool low price of $195… sort of. The $195 version is, unfortunately, not as full-featured as the previous cheapest Model Y at $44k. This new one has no center touchscreen, no speakers, no motor, no battery, and no human-sized seats. But hey, your pet mouse might enjoy riding around in it. Because this new one is a…
After analyzing a barrage of spy videos and close-up snapshots of near-production Tesla Cybertruck prototypes and release candidates, it was pretty clear that its build quality was awful. Even the late-stage prototypes had glaring panel gaps, ill-fitting fender flares, and misaligned elements all around. But Tesla showcased on Friday, November 10, 2023, what appeared to be a production-ready Cybertruck in New York City during the Annual Barron Conference. And it looked a whole lot better. The Cybertruck popped up at the Lincoln Center in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. Why was it there? Well, billionaire investor Ron Baron…
In September, new all-electric car registrations in the United States continued to increase, although the rate of year-over-year expansion recently decreased. According to the registration data from Experian (via Automotive News), the total number of battery electric car (BEV) registrations during the first nine months of 2023 amounted to 852,904, which is about 61 percent more than a year ago and about 7.4 percent of the total market (up from 5.2 percent at this same time in 2022). Registration data lags behind sales/deliveries, by at least several weeks, but can be used as a proxy of sales, especially since not…
In the investment world, Charlie Munger is well known as Warren Buffett’s highly successful right-hand man. The two are legends in the financial investment industry. But, naturally, Buffett gets the bulk of the praise and attention. There was one big investment that was reportedly outside the normal process for the duo, and that was Munger convincing Buffett to take a chance and invest in BYD when it was just getting rolling on its transition to EVs. Of course, BYD had a useful base as a battery producer, but many battery producers from that era have gone under or bet on…
Electric wagons are sadly still few and far between in 2023, but Volkswagen is about to address this long-roof EV penury with this – the ID.7 Tourer. Our colleagues at Motor1.com Italy got up close with Wolfsburg’s first estate without a combustion engine in Marseille, France ahead of the official release, hence why it’s still camouflaged. If you’re Italian is a bit rusty, you can auto-generate subtitles in your preferred language. Sharing the MEB platform with the ID.7 sedan (it’s technically a hatchback) and all the other bespoke electric cars from Volkswagen, the zero-emission wagon wants to be the antidote to…
The main hurdle to mass electric vehicle adoption at the moment is the higher costs of EVs compared to their internal combustion engine-powered equivalents. Electric cars are typically more expensive to buy, and they also bring higher additional costs such as larger insurance premiums, more pronounced depreciation, and the installation of at-home charging equipment – for customers who want that (and they should). It’s always a good idea for people to know the total cost of ownership of an EV over a longer time period so that they can do the math and see if they can afford it –…

You can be sure that each week I spend ample time snorkeling to the depths of Alibaba’s odd electric vehicle listings to find the most interesting and wackiest offerings from China. And those of you who prefer the wheeled variety will be happy to know that I’ve got a great four-wheeled monstrosity coming next week. But this week I found something that rises above anything I’ve featured before, or at least nearly everything. And while I had to stretch the limits of the term “electric vehicle” to make it happen, I think this consumer-grade Chinese home elevator is just cool…
