The lithium-ion EV battery market appears to be on the verge of correction in the U.S., after a few years of rapid growth with multi-billion investments. There is no doubt about the growth in the EV segment, however, the expansion is not as fast and smooth as initially planned. Because of that, some of the EV battery manufacturers are following carmakers and are scaling back/delaying their investments in new battery factories. According to the Financial Times, two South Korean battery manufacturers—LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation’s SK On—recently slightly reduced their workforce in the U.S. In the case of LG…

This is good news, but the broader picture is something I find frustrating and indicative of Tesla’s mistakes with Autopilot and “Full Self Driving” (Beta) in recent years. With coming upgrades, Tesla vehicles are going to get washers on front cameras. This is necessary if Tesla ever hopes to have more than ADAS (i.e., FSD). But why did it take so long to figure out these are needed? CleanTechnica readers have been saying for several years that these are needed. One drive with Autopilot or FSD (Beta) in rainy weather will tell you the same. It’s just a bit mind…
Big, powerful electric luxury SUVs with sub-5-second acceleration times and ranges of 300 miles or more are now ubiquitous. That certainly wasn’t the case in 2019 when Audi E-Tron deliveries started, or in 2017, when Audi powertrain and chassis development chief Siegfried Pint promised me that the E-Tron’s tri-motor system would make it corner “like a hunting dog chasing a rabbit.” While many of the E-Tron’s first-mover range and performance numbers fell behind with the arrival of all the other luxury electric SUVs, the 2024 Audi Q8 E-Tron SUV and Sportback catch up with the Joneses—with a bigger battery pack,…
There’s something inherently fun about the idea of a solar-powered electric houseboat. Living on the water and never paying for fuel sounds like a dream for many people. But would anyone make it a reality by buying a houseboat sight unseen from China? I’ve found plenty of fun and strange EVs for this Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week column, but the electric houseboats have always been some of the most outlandish. This time though, the houseboat actually looks like something that you could conceivably live in. Largely surrounded by glass walls, the houseboat helps avoid that claustrophobic…
Neta plans to expand its global network coverage to 50 countries and reach 500 overseas sales and service outlets by 2024. (Image credit: Neta Auto) Neta Auto, the electric vehicle (EV) brand of Chinese company Hozon Auto, is bringing its vehicles to a new market as it continues to advance its globalization strategy. Neta made its EVs available in Costa Rica on November 24, marking the company’s official entry into the Central and South American market, it said today. Neta plans to expand its global network coverage to 50 countries and reach 500 overseas sales and service outlets by 2024,…
CleanTechnica’s authors write often about their experiences with electric vehicles. They detail experiences as they go off with spouses, children, friends, and even dogs. I wish I could do that, but I don’t have an EV — or any car at all. In fact, I don’t even drive. So, I hope nobody minds if I write about different sorts of adventures we do in my family, especially because there is a point to the story and how we deal with addressing climate change. Let’s start with a little bit of an exposition. In the early spring of 1945, the navigator…
Canvus turns retired wind turbine blades into beautiful park benches, planters, and picnic tables for public spaces across the US. The US Department of Energy estimates that the average rate of wind turbine retirements will include up to 9,000 blades per year by 2026, and that number will only grow. So Rocky River, Ohio-based startup Canvus is keeping end-of-life wind turbine blades out of landfills by turning them into functional public art. Big wind turbine manufacturers such as Vestas, GE, and Avangrid have sent thousands of blades to Canvus’s factory since its founding in April 2022. Canvus, in turn, collaborates with…

Volkswagen has outlined a plan to strengthen its position in China with an all-new platform for affordable electric cars. The platform will be based on local components. The news was shared on Friday by China chief Ralf Brandstaetter during the opening a new EV development and procurement center—Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC) in Hefei. An investment of around $1.1 billion in the VCTC is expected to create over 2,000 jobs. According to Reuters, Volkswagen will develop a new entry-level, China-specific platform, currently known as the “A Main Platform.” The focus is on lowering costs, partially through using an even…
