Honda recently unveiled a small, folding electric scooter known as the Motocompacto that is often referred to as a suitcase scooter. But now a rival Japanese electric scooter company has what could become a serious competitor. Meet Arma, the first lunchbox scooter. The Arma scooter is both smaller and lighter than Honda’s Motocompacto, making it an even more portable design. While the Motocompacto is designed to fit easily in the trunk of your car, the Arma electric scooter looks like you could just walk around with it tucked under your arm. Of course, it’s got a convenient little handle as…
U.S. sales of EVs and hybrids are both soaring, but there’s a key difference that distinguishes EVs: By and large, the ones that are selling well remain priced as luxury goods. That’s one of the takeaways from an electrified vehicle sales update, released Monday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Harnessing data from Wards Intelligence, the EIA found that hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs combined added up to 15.8% of light-duty vehicle sales through the third quarter of 2023, versus 12.3% and 8.5% for the same periods in 2022 and 2021, respectively. 2014-2023 Sales of EV, hybrid, PHEV (U.S.…

At the COP 28 Climate Conference in Dubai, the fossil fuel companies are still wrangling about how they can increase their production while keeping the world from becoming a baked potato. One key way is to reduce direct methane leaks and emissions. When it comes to methane gas — often incorrectly known as “natural gas” — we need to draw a sharp distinction between the gas that is burned and the gas that escapes into the atmosphere during extraction, transmission, and storage. Methane that…
In November, XPeng’s global electric car deliveries increased month-over-month for the 10th consecutive time, reaching a new record. Observing XPeng is interesting since this is one of the first Chinese EV start-ups inspired by the Tesla brand. Also, XPeng is China’s first automaker to implement a high-level ADAS for urban areas in series-produced cars. Last month, the Chinese company delivered 20,041 all-electric vehicles, which is 245% more than a year ago and the second result above 20,000 in history. The overwhelming majority of XPeng sales are in China. The XPeng G6, considered a Tesla Model Y competitor, remains the best-selling…

Hyundai Motor America reported 70,079 vehicle sales in the United States in November (up 10.7% year-over-year), which is the 16th month of consecutive growth. So far this year, the brand sold 726,031 vehicles, over 11% more than a year ago. And there’s even better news for the Korean giant on the electric front. Last month, sales of the Hyundai E-GMP-based all-electric cars—Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6—amounted to 2,372 and 1,386 respectively, for a total of 3,758. That’s a 216% increase year-over-year. The share of E-GMP BEVs out of Hyundai’s total volume improved to 5.4%, compared to 1.9% a year ago. On top…
Algorithms have probably fed you a barrage of Tesla Cybertruck updates on social media over the past 24 hours. Now that the boisterous delivery event is over, and the internet storm somewhat subsided, we have room to zero in on some lingering questions. How exactly does the Cybertruck compare to the traditional trucks? Does it deserve mainstream truck buyers’ attention? Will it accrue volumes overseas? InsideEVs spoke to two industry veterans for insights. Tesla reiterated the utilitarian aspects of the Cybertruck at the delivery event, but it could have limitations in that area, said Ed Kim, the president and chief analyst…
Volvo EX90 details, Wrangler 4xe recall, EV battery prices, Tesla Cybertruck: The Week in Reverse
What did Hyundai and Kia present as better than in-wheel motors? And which electric truck are shoppers most excited about? Hint: It’s not the Cybertruck. This is our look back at the Week In Reverse—right here at Green Car Reports—for the week ending December 1, 2023. The Tesla Cybertruck was revealed Thursday in production form, and the Cybertruck’s stainless-steel construction, steer-by-wire system, and packaging like no other truck are all noteworthy firsts. Tesla made plenty of claims about its performance—like out-accelerating a Porsche 911, while towing a 911—but it failed to live up to some of the key pragmatic targets…
NIO continues to grow in China. It may not be anywhere close to the sales of EV giants BYD and Tesla, but it’s growing. Its November sales were up 12.6%, and its sales throughout the first 11 months of the year were up 33.1%. In volume terms, NIO had 15,959 sales in November and 142,026 sales from January through November. The company is approaching half a million cumulative sales, sitting at 431,582 at the moment. NIO’s November sales were slightly down compared to October, but they have been more or less stable for the past three months. In more positive…
A canton in Switzerland commissioned a project in which solar panels were attached vertically to a roadside retaining wall. The canton of Appenzell Ausserhoden in northeastern Switzerland is aiming to generate at least 40% of its electricity from renewables by 2035. So, it exercised a little creativity and covered a roadside retaining wall with 756 glass-glass solar panels. The panels have an output of 325 kW and an energy yield of around 230,000 kWh annually. This is equivalent to the consumption of about 52 Swiss households. The energy will be fed into the grid of energy supplier St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke, and the canton…
