Fewer EVs with connections to China may soon be tax-credit-eligible. EVs still make up a tiny portion of the non-luxury market, yet a plunge in the raw materials needed for EV batteries could make them more affordable. And which of this year’s new EVs are the best? This and more, here at Green Car Reports.  This morning, Green Car Reports named its four finalists for Best Car To Buy 2024. What are these four plug-in models new for this year, and which are the cleanest, greenest, and best for treading lightly? The U.S. Department of Energy and Treasury Department on…

A dead EV battery is unpleasant, to say the least. Last month we wrote about an Uber driver’s Tesla Model 3 that conked out after 120,000 miles and 15 months. Well, now we found out about another Tesla that fared much worse. The Model Y you see in the video embedded above, published on the Out of Spec Guide YouTube channel, is also used in the ridesharing business, driving about 40,000 to 50,000 miles every year. But that’s not something so out of the ordinary among rideshare drivers. Having the high-voltage battery replaced twice in two years is. The car…

To kick off the competition, we’ll explore each of these models in greater depth over the next couple of weeks. 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 The Ioniq 6 makes a daring design statement, and whether you see its teardrop tail and low nose as Porsche-like or an homage to Art Deco streamliners, it’s refreshing in an…

The Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday issued proposed guidance on foreign battery content in EVs that could cut the federal tax credit for some models. But it also provides a clearer picture for automakers and battery suppliers. Starting Jan. 1, EVs are ineligible for the federal tax credit of up to $7,500 if they have key battery components sourced from a “foreign entity of concern.” The exclusion initially applies to manufacturing and assembly or battery components, but extends to mining, processing, and recycling of critical minerals in 2025. In October, China’s NEV penetration at retail stood at 37.8 percent, up 7.6 percentage points from 30.2 percent a year earlier. The rapid growth of China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sector has exceeded many people’s original expectations. A senior government official said the country could achieve its goal of more than 50 percent NEV penetration 10 years ahead of target. In 2017, only 777,000 NEVs were sold in China, while they reached 6,887,000 in 2022, said Miao Wei, former minister of industry and information technology and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).…

In November, NIO global electric car deliveries increased by over 12% year-over-year to 15,959, which on the one hand is a positive outcome, but on the other hand, it’s kind of worrying. That’s because of the volume, which has been oscillating around 16,000 units a month in the past three months. It’s noticeably less than in the record months of July-August (around 20,000), The drop in sales is despite the fact that the entire lineup of models has been gradually refreshed. We would expect faster growth but it seems that the initial surge of the upgraded models (like the ES6…

Most batteries powering today’s electric vehicles are made from subcategories of lithium-ion, with chemistries like nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC), nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA), and lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP), among others. But if you’ve been plugged into battery developments this past week, you might be aware that an alternative seems to be gaining traction (again after initial reports in 2022). And that’s sodium-ion. A study published in the U.S. government’s National Library of Medicine has labeled sodium-ion as a “rising star.” On the other side of the globe, it is even closer to commercialization. BYD is constructing a dedicated sodium-ion battery plant in eastern China with a…
