The Chevrolet Bolt is having its best sales year ever—right in time for it to get canceled. But General Motors is responding to the immense popularity of the pair of compact electric vehicles by releasing a heavily updated Bolt with more advanced hardware in 2025. And when it does, only the larger Bolt EUV will be on the menu. GM officials confirmed to InsideEVs this week that the upcoming next-generation Bolt will be EUV-only, citing the overwhelming popularity of the crossover model over the smaller Bolt EV. “We are glad to see the enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt. We will…
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the all-electric automaker believes that its new Cybertruck will be “much safer per mile” than other trucks in its class. The statement comes all while the Cybertruck remains under fire regarding its occupant safety since Tesla shared slow-motion crash test videos during the delivery event, which raised concerns that the truck lacked crumple zones to absorb impact forces. The concern was due to the lack of visible deformation of the truck during a head-on collision at 35 MPH. The truck appeared to not crumple like most modern vehicles, and even resulted in the…
The Tesla Cybertruck is equipped with an all-new 48-volt low-voltage system, which replaces the outdated but still the popular, 12-volt system. This move from 12- to 48 volts for auxiliary onboard devices was confirmed by Tesla during the 2023 Investor Day in March and applied in the final product as promised. *The main traction battery system that runs the drive units is a high-voltage one with a nominal voltage of over 800 volts. The main benefit of higher voltage for auxiliary devices is that the same power can be supplied at a lower current, which directly lowers the current losses and…
EV range roundup, Fiat 500e battery swapping, Morgan 3-wheel electric sports car: Today’s Car News
Some EVs do exceed EPA range figures at 70 mph. Britain’s Morgan splits the difference between a vintage sports car and an Aptera with its latest prototype. And Ample’s battery swapping tech is getting put to the test on a car-sharing fleet of Fiat EVs in Spain. This and more, here at Green Car Reports. Stellantis is testing EV battery swapping from Ample on 100 Fiat 500e electric cars that are part of the company’s Free2Move car-sharing service—and that means a fully charged battery in five minutes. With this trial, it’s seeing if battery swapping can scale up, or extend…
Public charging can be an EV dealbreaker, especially for those who don’t have home charging. But the global automaker Stellantis is working on quelling that reason for EV rejection with tech that can give you a full charge in less than five minutes. Starting next year, a fleet of 100 Fiat 500e electric minicars from parent company Stellantis’ Free2Move car-sharing service will be equipped with modular battery–based swapping tech from California-based Ample. Free2Move primarily offers gasoline-powered Jeeps in the U.S., and it recently exited from Portland, leaving its only availability in the U.S. in Washington, D.C. The 500e test fleet is…
British automaker Morgan on Wednesday unveiled a new prototype for an electric version of its classic three-wheeler. In addition to charmingly anachronistic sports cars, Morgan is known for three-wheelers, which the company originally started producing to exploit a tax loophole in its home market. Morgan has teased both three-wheeled and four-wheeled EVs before, but this time the company claims it’s serious about electrification. Dubbed XP-1, the new prototype isn’t intended for production but will “act as the forerunner to all future electric Morgan sports cars,” according to a company press release. Following a 12-month design and build period, it will…
The real-world range of EVs can vary a lot at highway speeds, Consumer Reports found in a recent test. The publication tested 22 EVs from multiple automakers at a constant speed of 70 mph to simulate highway driving conditions. While some cars exceeded their EPA-rated ranges, one by more than 70 miles, nearly half fell short. A Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat Extended Range ran out of charge 50 miles short of its EPA range rating, while a Lucid Air Touring and Tesla Model S Long Range missed the mark by 40 miles and 39 miles, respectively. 2023 Lucid Air Touring…
Gotion’s joint venture plant in Thailand has a planned capacity of 2 GWh of battery packs per year for the first phase, which will be expanded to 8 GWh in the future. (Image credit: Gotion High-tech) Gotion High-tech’s joint venture in Thailand has seen its first locally-produced battery pack roll off the assembly line, marking an important milestone for the Volkswagen-backed Chinese power battery giant in the international market. With two Thai workers completing the final assembly process on December 7, the joint venture — NV Gotion Co Ltd — saw its first battery pack roll off the line, the…
If you’re in London and looking to hail one of its legendary black taxis, there’s a good chance you’ll get an emissions-free ride. Half of London’s fleet of 15,000 black cabs are now all-electric vehicles. And starting next year, you can Uber one too – a huge coup for a company once banned in London and loathed by taxi drivers all the world. A new announcement from manufacturer LEVC and Transport for London (TfL) says that 50% of London’s black taxis are now battery electric vehicles, with most manufactured by Geely’s LEVC. While the first EV taxis hit the London…
A report earlier today said some of Nio’s departments were asked to prepare reserve lists of layoffs, which may widen the original dismissals to 20 percent to 30 percent. (Image credit: CnEVPost) Nio (NYSE: NIO) denied that it will make further layoffs after a report earlier today sparked discussion. The company has no plans for further layoffs and will continue to be dynamic in the markets it operates in, Nio said in a brief statement shared with CnEVPost. Earlier today, a Bloomberg report cited people familiar with the matter as saying Nio may make further layoffs to cut costs and…
