Porsche has begun accepting reservations for the Macan EV in China, with the official launch set for April 25, the first day of the Beijing auto show.

Porsche’s all-electric Macan EV is powered by a 100-kWh battery pack from Chinese power cell giant CATL and has a WLTP range of up to more than 780 km in the city, local media outlet Cailian said in a report today.

The brief report doesn’t mention any further details about the pack, including which of CATL’s battery packs it uses.

CATL launched the Qilin Battery on June 23, 2022, claiming a 13 percent increase in power compared to the 4680 battery with the same chemistry and pack size.

The Qilin Battery is CATL’s innovation in battery pack construction, not battery chemistry. This means that this pack structure can be used for ternary batteries as well as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

On August 16, 2023, CATL unveiled the Shenxing Battery, a battery based on LFP chemistry that supports ultra-fast charging.

Vehicles equipped with the Shenxing Battery can get 400 kilometers of range on a 10-minute charge and is the world’s first LFP battery to support 4C charging, CATL said at the August launch.

CATL is the world’s largest power battery maker, with a 37.4 percent share in the January-November period, the only one to exceed 30 percent, according to South Korean market researcher SNE Research.

Porsche officially unveiled the all-electric Macan EV in Singapore yesterday, its second EV after the Taycan and first electric SUV.

Based on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) 800 V high-voltage platform, the car is equipped with a two-motor four-wheel drive system and is available in two versions, the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo.

The Macan EV measures 4784 mm in length, 1938 mm in width and 1622 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2893 mm.

The electric motor of the Macan 4 delivers a combined power of up to 300 kW and a maximum torque of 650 Nm, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 s. It has a city WLTP range of up to 784 km.

With a combined power of 470 kW and a maximum torque of 1,130 Nm, the Macan Turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and has a city WLTP range of up to 765 km.

The car is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack with a charging power of up to 270 kW, capable of charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in 21 minutes.

Porsche announced yesterday that customers in China can start paying a refundable RMB 9,110 to reserve the model, thus gaining benefits including priority delivery.

The model will officially go on sale in China on April 25 during the Beijing auto show, and retail prices will be announced at that time, according to information on its reservation page.

The 17th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024) will take place from April 25 to May 4, 2024, and will mark the event’s return after a four-year hiatus.
